This Shawnee/USA planter is a wonderful depiction of midcentury modern craftsmanship. The Shawnee Pottery Company began in 1937 and the business finally close in 1961. The Shawnee/USA Pottery Company made nearly ten thousand pieces of pottery per day with the intention of sale the in five and dime stores and other inexpensive outlets. This item is stamped on the bottom in the clay “USA 4001” which I think is the identification number. Today Shawnee/USA pottery is very collectible with the most well-known and popular pieces being the Corn King and Corn Queen lines. Some of the other lines of pottery that was made by the company are the Winnie and Smiley Pigs and Muggsy Dog. It is in excellent condition with no cracks, chips, fleabites, nicks, repairs, or stains.
